Tips for Reading the FAHSA Link
Welcome to this edition of the FAHSA Link.
Please note that news topics are highlighted in a brief paragraph or
two. To read the complete document related to a specific member
type, click on the link directly following the article (which will
take you to the Alerts Page for ALFs, CCRCs, HUDs, General, or
Nursing Homes) and then click on the latest ALERT. Please remember
that last year, the FAHSA Board of Trustees made the decision that
your membership dues will entitle you to access only those Web pages
that relate to the membership type your dues cover. That is, if you
pay dues for nursing home beds only then will you be able to access
all general membership and nursing home-related Web pages, but you
will be unable to access housing, ALF or CCRC topics. Suggestions/Comments

Study Maps Demographic
Trends for Seniors and Boomers - As reported in a
recent newsletter from Ziegler Capital Markets, the
Brookings Institution just released a report Mapping the
Growth of Older America: Seniors and Boomers in the
Early 21st Century (May 2007). "The Brookings
Institution study analyzes U.S. Census Bureau data for
insights into the changing size, location and
characteristics of America's seniors (ages 65+) and
pre-seniors (ages 55-64). The study offers several
interesting findings related to the how and where of
future market changes related to aging seniors. The
study identifies the growth rates in a number of smaller
metropolitan areas and notes that 'there is increasing
interest in smaller communities and even the new
metropolitan areas, especially those with warmer
climates and access to natural amenities like water and
mountains.' St. George, UT is the fastest-growing small
metropolitan area (populations under (500,000) with a
150.5 percent growth in its senior population between
1990 and 2005. Anchorage (AK), Yuma (AZ) and
Naples-Marco Island (FL) are in the second, third and
fourth positions. In the fast-growing large metropolitan
areas (populations over 500,000) Las Vegas-Paradise, NV
tops the list with a 131.4 percent growth in senior
population between 1990 and 2005.
McAllen-Edinburg-Pharr, TX ranks second at 63.3 percent
growth."
Senior living providers who are focused on retaining
their market share not only today but into the future
may find this study useful for strategic planning. To
access the report, go to www.brooking
s.edu/metro and click on VIEW FULL PAPER link).

twins. Ms. Harris served as administrator of the nursing
home at Florida Presbyterian, a Lakeland continuing care
retirement community, for the past ten years. The
nursing home has the distinction of having received two
Gold Seals under her leadership. Ms. Harris will long be
remembered by all who knew her as a loving mother and

Care Planning/Assessment Citations on the Rise
- This week, FAHSA staff participated in a
conference call with representatives of the Agency for
Health Care Administration, FMQAI (Florida's Quality
Improvement Organization - QIO), and other interested
groups to discuss a recent federal report comparing the
quality performance of Florida nursing homes with that
of other states and the nation. The data show that
Florida nursing homes are falling behind. Although the
reasons are not clear, care planning and assessments may
be part of the problem. This assumption is based on
survey results from the new Quality Indicator Survey
(QIS). Since experience with the QIS is limited, it may
be premature to draw conclusions, but a trend is
certainly emerging that should not be ignored. For more
on this issue and others listed below, be sure to read
the latest Nursing Home Alert, NH 07-16 dated 6/21/07.
